The following notes were supplied by Iain Grant in connection with his workshop at Ashtorre on 15 April 2023
We’ll be using watercolours. I would suggest paper of minimum 14 x 12 preferably bigger. Turner used papers brought from UK ,probably fairly softly sized (so handled a bit like Bockingford). (Two Rivers is probably the closest but far too expensive for a workshop!), and papers obtained locally on longer trips. He was fond of tinted paper using grey, pale green and cream in various sketches, so if your folks wanted to try that they can. Paints were also a mixture of Winsor and Newton (he was a friend of the founders) and local. He is known to have used a fairly limited palette. Favourites included : Prussian, Ultramarine and Cobalt Blues, Indian and Naples Yellow, Crimson and an earthy red (Raw sienna, Light Red, Venetian Red all seems to work). So folks should just bring their usual paints I think. The brushes I’ll be using are a mop, 16, 10, 6 round, a medium sized flat, and a rigger. Again what people feel comfortable with. Turner was also very keen on bodycolour, particularly on the tinted papers, but he seems to use it in most sketches. So some white gouache is recommended. Sorry if this offends any watercolour purists, but if it was good enough for Turner it’ll do me.
